Requests for official Portage County criminal records must go to the government office that keeps the source file. The Sheriff’s Records Division handles its own reports and booking material, while the Clerk of Circuit Court supplies court files. Wisconsin DOJ and Wisconsin DOC maintain separate state systems. The contacts below help route a request to the right custodian.

Need an Official Record?

Portage County records are divided by the agency that created or maintains them:

  • Court case files: contact the Portage County Clerk of Circuit Court for filed documents, judgments, certified copies, and transcripts
  • State criminal histories: use the Wisconsin DOJ Crime Information Bureau and its Wisconsin Online Record Check System
  • Arrest and booking files: request records created by the Portage County Sheriff from its Records Division
  • Police incident reports: ask the city, campus, or other police agency that wrote the report
  • Expungement records: contact the circuit clerk about the court file and current forms under Wis. Stat. § 973.015
  • Registry or corrections data: use the Wisconsin DOC system responsible for that record
